Born in London in 1957 Mark was brought up by his father Richard (formerly Captain in the Coldstream Guards) and mother Camilla (nee Beddington) with his sister Clare in Hampshire. His formal education was completed after an enjoyable five years at Eton College in 1975. After an abortive attempt to follow his father into the Coldstream Guards on a short service commission Mark went travelling. His tertiary education (‘University of Life’) included a year spent travelling around Australia selling books door-to-door followed by a year as a ‘fire extinguisher salesman’ in South Africa. The twenty one year old Mark returned to London and talked himself into a job with a Lloyd ‘s insurance broker.
Mark has spent forty years working in the Lloyd's and London insurance markets. Having trained as a marine and energy insurance broker he became a specialist in the emerging market for Political Risks Insurance.
Mark would describe himself as a wine lover, gastronome, cook, Francophile, rugby and cricket fan, golfing hacker...and more recently has been learning about growing veggies on an allotment!
